Routemaster Front Brake Slack Adjusters Only. A DIY Repair.

I have noticed in the last 6 month's or so some front slack adjusters returned to me for repair has had the anchor pin that the main return spring hooks onto, was so worn by the expansion and contraction of the said spring, that the anchor pin had worn through and eventually sheared off.

In reality, when this fault occurs normally on foot brake application,the slack adjuster is unable to return to it's static position,(ie foot brake off) which facilitates the automatic racking up of the front foundation brake(s) to compensate for shoe wear.Therefore with a ineffective return spring the ratchet mechanism will cease to function.

When this fault does exist a domino effect will now take effect.The brake linings will drag on the drum, increasing the wear rate and heat generated from friction.With no automatic adjustment in operation the wear gap naturally increases between drum and liner on brake application.
The driver in time will experience the feel of weak and or delayed braking.

A non expensive but comprehensive DIY repair kit Part No AEC Z2/47003, is available to repair this fault.
